Irving Penn...

"Photographing a cake can be art." With an education and career that started almost 75 years ago, Irving Penn has become on of the most respected, recognizable and sometimes controversial photographers of our time. In 1985 he was rightfully named on of "The World's Greatest Photographers" by Popular Photography Magazine. Both his portraiture and still life force us to look past singular detail, and into the image as a whole, to understand the narrative that is always distinctly present. His early career showed a love for glamorous and classic art forms, and then moved into more modernistic, editorial mediums. Looking at his earlier pieces I am drawn to their mystery and capacity and I can't help but think of my sister who has always been, at heart, a 21st century starlet...
